fire damage

my cousin lost her life in her home due to unattended cooking which resulted in a fire. The buildings on both sides of her building are owned by the same person. My cousin had no insurance on the building or her life. The letter from the neighbors insurance company claims $60,000 in repairs already with a possible $250,000 more in repairs. She had no will and leaves behind a 14 year old which the family is caring for. Our hope was to sell this property and put some money aside for the daughter. Can they come after the money?

Re: fire damage

I'm very sorry for your tragic loss!! If the neighbor's ins co sues the estate of your cousin & obtains a judgment, they can try to collect by selling anything owned by your cousin, possibly including the money you obtain by selling the home. You really need to discuss this with an experienced attorney to get asset protection. Please feel free to contact my office.
