Hello,

I'm looking to sue my ex boyfriend for money owed, around $16,000. About half of it is for various loans and purchases, and I have a signed document acknowledging that he owes me this money.

Then there are 2 jobs I did for him (I'm a graphic designer). One was invoiced and unpaid. The other was for a friend of his- I don't have direct contact with this person, and he was the facilitator. I don't have anything in writing other than text messages and emails that will show that I've done the work and that he promised I would get paid.

What are my options? What kind of lawyer do I need? (note that I selected credit, debt & collections law, but I'm not sure if this is correct.) I think that to start I'd like to send a warning letter, but I need it to be sent from a law firm, otherwise I believe it would be dismissed.

I appreciate your advice.

Thank you,

Gal Dor

You can hire an atty, although the fees might not be worth it, or you can sue yourself ("pro se") in a court that is between Small Claims and Supreme Court, where damages are $5,001-$25K, County.
