My mother in law is currently in the hospital, but needs to be moved to a nursing home. Her husband is sickly, but still fairly independent and still living in their modest house in central New York. As far as I know, they have no long term care insurance. Who pays for the nursing home? Will they be forced to sell their house?

This can be a very complicated area of the law and you really can't have a long dialogue on this website so that you can understand how all this works. Since your questions are so basic, and you're going to have a lot of them, what I advise is for you to make an appointment at a few of the nursing homes in central New York and sit with the finance person and they'll be able to give you a pretty good understanding of how the system works. They may even complete the Medicaid application for you, or you may want to consult with a lawyer.

Good luck. I hope your mom is comfortable.
