My dad's ''hermit'' brother passed away, and we have no idea where to start.

My Uncle passed away and his closest living relative is my Dad. He has no wife or children. My dad and I know that we should get a lawyer, but aren't sure how much it is going to cost. We haven't found a will, or anything like that. We just want to make sure that his assets and property go where he wanted it to, but we have no idea where to start looking or what we should be looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He also has many safe deposit boxes, gold bullion, coins, ira's and bank accounts, and other things that we also don't know how to deal with or find. Again, we are struggling with this. Thanks for any help you can give us.

You and your dad should definitely see an Elder Law attorney. Feel free to ask the attorney about costs. It is likely that you will need to open a probate estate, even without a will. Your uncle may have creditors that need to be dealt with before any property can be distributed. An attorney can help you sort this out and give you direction on how to proceed.
